REVIEW: I Dream of Jetty: Beach House

This blog is dedicated to reviewing the "I Dream of Jetty" beach house, located in Lincoln City, Oregon. Because of the amount and severity of the damage and disrepair of this apparent luxury home, the entire blog is devoted solely to this review. The reviews are divided up by room or category.

If after reading this blog you still make a reservation, please come back and let our readers know how it went. Hopefully, you will follow renters who showed a bit of care...

We rented "I Dream of Jetty" for several days in early 2011.

Our experience: First of all, it was very difficult to discuss and finalize the rental with the owner. After many emails and phone calls, we knew that this person was either unwilling or unable to answer the simplest questions. Also, there was no option for using a credit card. These things should have been a warning. But we kept looking at those great pictures, the proximity to the beach and the decent price we negotiated.

On arrival, the house was a disaster. Garbage was strewn all over the driveway. The garbage cans filled and overflowing. The entry was sandy and dirty. The windows smeared with fingerprints and slime. The kitchen had food and dishes spread all over. None of the beds were made. Pillows were stained and dirty. Sheets were piled nearly four foot high in the laundry room, along with wet and muddy towels.

All of the furniture had stains. Two of the futons were broken. The reclining sofa in the main living room was broken. All carpets and walls were stained. There was visible dog hair everywhere. The hot tub was green with algae and tepid. Hardwood floors were dirty...and the list goes on and on and on.

We called the number provided for the manager. The instructions requested a text message unless it was an emergency. The situation was not quite an emergency, but definitely warranted speaking to someone. The owner quickly returned our call. Claiming the manager refused to respond. We received apologies and a stern reminder that there was absolutely NO refunds. Then a spiel about the manager falling down on the job and that she would be dismissed immediately (after a 30 day notice).

It took three people approximately 2.5 hours to clean the house sufficiently just to unload our gear. Plus a couple of more hours of laundry and cleaning to be able to use the kitchen, baths and beds. We did agree to a DIY cleaning arrangement, but that was assuming we were coming in to a relatively clean house at arrival.

Before we left we cleaned all the areas we used, washed the laundry and even washed the windows--not exactly the most relaxing of vacations. Especially minus the hot tub.

The location was great. The house was huge. And we ended up having a great time. However, do not be fooled into paying for any type of cleaning. There is NONE. Do not expect to use many of the amenities, including the jacuzzi or hot tub, nor the spa area.

If you can be happy cleaning before you settle in and can simply enjoy the views you will be fine in "I Dream of Jetty."

Strong Suggestion: FIND SOMEWHERE ELSE TO STAY

  3. We stayed here for 10 days in June. Do not recommend it. After 2 attempts of contact and no response at all from the owner, we are posting the letter we sent that outlines our complaints pertaining to this vacation rental. Please take the time to read it BEFORE you rent this home.

    Dear _________:

I feel as though you were incredibly dishonest in your representation of this home; both in the photos provided on the Internet and in our conversations. After I read the blog and we spoke on the phone, I gave you the benefit of the doubt, thinking maybe those individuals had an axe to grind and or, as you stated, “were trying to intimidate you”. Sadly, that was not the case. Honestly, this home deserves better; it is a nice home with a gorgeous view, but we would NEVER return. Neither would the 25 or so guests that came in/out during our 10 day stay. All of which want to post on the blog but I requested they all wait until I had to chance to contact you.

I would have been willing to pay up to $30 a night for a cleaner home. Or, if I had known the state of cleanliness I would have hired a cleaning crew before/after my stay. Advertising a luxury home and renting the opposite leads to dissatisfaction. On the flip side, show pictures of what the home truly looks like and then guests won't be disappointed; if they don't mind filthy carpets, unsafe features for youngsters, and minimal amenities then they will feel right at home.

You never said anything about us being responsible for the cleaning or that we had to bring all of our paper products until you received our final payment.

Listed below are some of the problems with I Dream of Jetty:

    Cleaning Crew??

I was told that you have a cleaning crew that arrives between renters and insures that the house is clean, and ready for the next tenant. When do they arrive and what do they clean? When I arrived, the home was a mess.

No beds were made. But that is ok, because I found it necessary to apply Lysol to every mattress and pillow before my loved-ones slept there. Actually, upon reflection, I contacted each of them and told them they might want to bring their own bedding.
There was garbage left remaining in the interior garbage cans.
There was feces and urine on ALL the toilets that I, upon arrival, had to clean.
The microwave was not clean – inside or out.
Windows were dirty – inside and out.
Cabinets, counter tops, all flatware, glasses, plates, bowls, utensil trays, dish drainers and spa had to be washed prior to use.

Upon arrival, it took 2 of us 3 hours to clean the home; this was basically just the kitchen and bathrooms. We cleaned constantly throughout our visit, windows, stove, walls, etc. Upon departure, it took 3 of us of 4 hours. I can assure you we left it much cleaner than we found it after a combined total of 18 hours of cleaning.

    Safety Issues

None of the doors in the home lock easily or properly.

Front door deadbolt won't lock from the outside. This door has clearly been broken into, as all the molding around the deadbolt has been shattered.
Down stairs door is extremely difficult to lock and unlock, as evidenced by the note posted on the door. What if there was a fire? How would guests escape?
The bathroom upstairs had a sticky lock for 4 days until one of our guests – a grown man of 40! was locked in and the door would not unlock. The door actually had to be removed from the frame, the lock then disassembled, and the door put back on. We left the lock disassembled in fear that a child would be the next victim.
The downstairs futon was reported broken in March. Well it is still busted, although it is even much worse than in that picture. Wait until a toddler gets his/her leg stuck between broken slats.
There is a smell of propane near the fireplace upstairs even when it is not on.
    The fireplace downstairs doesn’t work.
The shower door in the downstairs bathroom is busted. If someone inside tries to open it from the right hand side, it falls from the frame. This fell off the track and hit my young son and startling him so badly that he started crying. This could fall onto someone and seriously injure them.
The window on the downstairs bathroom is shattered, although not to point that it has fallen from the frame yet.
The spa cover is nearly disintegrated and completely water-logged taking two adults to take it off and put back on.
The spa cover smells of mold and makes the water stink.

    Basic Amenities Lacking

No can opener, we had to buy many items for kitchen in order to be comfortable for a 10-day stay.
Approximately 9 forks and 37 spoons. Really?
Stove no longer self-lights, no lighter provided.
Oven is temperamental at best. Doesn't work at all at worst.
The television that was originally on the main floor wouldn't power on at all. The DVD player was missing the AC cord. We brought up the TV from the master bedroom but were never able to watch DVDs.

    Overall Cleanliness

The carpets were the most disgusting I have EVER encountered. I seriously doubt they have been cleaned since installation, whenever that was. We were not able to walk barefoot in this house the entire stay and advised all guests to bring slippers or other house shoes.
The furniture in the living room was FILTHY! We had to cover them with sheets immediately because we couldn't even stomach the stains.
We had a guest who had difficulty breathing in this home. This guest lives in Newport, so I doubt it had anything to do with the climate, but more to do with the mold that can prevalently be smelled throughout the downstairs bedrooms.
Blood stained pillows, mattresses, and sheets. I mean, this alone would have been helped if a cleaning crew actually arrived to make beds. Then guests would have been ignorant to the degree of filth.
We had to drain the hot tub in order in clean the filter and scrub the tub. The filter held about ¾ cup of debris and hair. Then, we refilled the hot tub and actually got to enjoy it the last four days of our stay.
As noted in 'Safety Issues' the spa cover is in such disrepair that is smells of mold and takes 2 strong people to move due to the water-logged state it is in.

  7. No, Mongo...no axe to grind,, and not attempting to intimidate anyone.

We simply see it as our duty to inform people about this situation so they do not end up spending their hard-earned money on a fraud.

Please see the Blog for an update on the BBB complaint.

  10. Just leaving this FILTHY DWELLING, thank goodness!!! I stayed here with my husband and 16 year old son. Its June of 2020. I took over 50 pictures of the DISGUSTING conditions 😳😳 we showed up after 4:00 and the "cleaning ladies" we're still at the home... There was absolutely NO CLEANING DONE! sticky floors, a stove top that was beyond greasy and covered in food droppings, the burners didn't work. The beds we're dirty and not made, the laundry room has no working dryer and there was dirty laundry PILED ALL OVER. The carpets and walls we're so stained and dirty, the furniture was also tattered, broken and in horrible condition. There was NO CABLE OR WIFI, although it was advertised in her AD. The "fireplaces" didn't work...there was random garbage stored in closets and spaces throughout the "house" there was no extra toilet paper or paper towels so we had to go buy our own 🙄 The pictures she uses to advertise this home we're taken in 2008! I wish I would have noticed that earlier 🙄 there were 3 overflowing bags of trash resting on the outside of the home as well ... Hot tub was not working the 1st night we showed up...I COULD HONESTLY GO ON FOREVER with all of the issues with this rental
